CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

IT HAD BEEN A week since Jim broke the news of Carrie's pregnancy to his parents. Everything seemed to have normalized in his household. Jim had come to the conclusion that his parents had accepted the idea of him marrying Carrie after college. The thought of Carrie made him work harder. He did not tell his parents that he was still in contact with Carrie. He would sneak out to call her, and they would talk in school. She did not look pregnant. Obviously she is managing to cover her pregnancy well, he thought.

Jim was at home on Friday evening, almost a week after his discussion with his parents about Carrie, when his mother received a phone call and said, “I will be right there.”

He glanced at her and knew there was trouble. “What's the matter, Mom?”

“It's your dad.”

“Another heart attack?”

“No, he just got into an accident and his car was totaled.”

“Oh my God, is he going to be okay?”

“I don't know, it sounded pretty serious,” she said while reaching for her keys in her handbag.

“I will drive. Which hospital is he in?” he asked.

“They rushed him to St. Vincent's hospital.”

“What happened?”

“I think a drunk driver just rear-ended him and he skidded off the road and his car fell over the bridge to the ground below.”

“Oh, my God, is he still alive? It sounds really serious.”

“They said that he is still alive and is still able to speak for now. They are not sure how long he is going to last.”

Jim and his mother drove to the hospital as fast they could. When they got to the emergency room, they were told that Jake was in the operating room and would be admitted to ICU room 300.

Patiently, they waited for hours for him to come out of surgery, until they were called to his room.

In his hospital room, Jake was unable to speak because he was unconscious, intubated, and connected to multiple monitors.

“Is he going to be okay?” Angie asked.

The nurse responded, “Ma'am, we will do all we can to help him. Is he related to you?”

“He is my husband.”

“My name is Susan and I am the nurse who is going to be taking care of him today. Right now he is in critical condition and anything can happen, but we are monitoring him closely. He has the best doctors on his case. Dr. Sanchez is his surgeon, and his primary physician is Dr. Lang.”

“Thanks for the information,” Angie said and went to her husband's side.

Jim was already calling, “Dad, Dad, can you hear me?”

Jake did not move a muscle.

Angie was in the hospital every day.

A week later, Jake opened his eyes and attempted to talk but realized he was on a ventilator.

“Don't talk, honey. You have a breathing tube in your mouth. The doctors said that you are doing so well that they might remove the tube tomorrow. Hang in there.”

Jake blinked in frustration and closed his eyes. All he could think of was that he made it; he was alive.
